Don't Buy From A Pet Store: Adopt A Dog
With our shelters and foster groups overflowing with pets, please consider adopting a dog rather than buying at a pet store. Purchasing an animal at a pet store is like paying puppy mill owners to keep abusing and overbreeding dogs. You might be surprised to learn that your local Animal Control Center and Humane Society often have purebreds who need homes and they know the local purebred-rescue groups in your area, too. But don't rule out a mixed breed dog; they make wonderful, loving pets. While you'll have to pay for your pup at any of these organizations, think of it as donating or paying it forward to rescue the next dogs who are strays, "foreclosure" pets, or puppy mill victims who need care until they find a wonderful new family like yours.
If you click on a link for one of the dogs featured below and you get a Petfinder message that the dog is no longer available, that's good news. We hope all these dogs are adopted soon!
Adopt-A-Dog: West Highland Mix, June 2010
From Petfinder.com: Leo was recently found running as a stray and lucky for him, he was found by a good samaritan who helped him find his way to Westie Rescue Missouri. He is such a gem, we cannot believe we could not locate a family looking for him. Leo is estimated to be approximately 9 years old and this sweet Westie mix still has a lot of years to be a part of your family! Leo is a lower energy dog who enjoys spending his days curled up on the couch next to his foster family. He also enjoys spending time exploring the back yard so a fenced yard would be a plus. He is in foster care with four dogs and two cats and is very easy going around them all. Out in public, he is easy going and charming with everyone he meets. We don't know much about Leo's past, but it appears he was well cared for by a family for most of his life. He is well-behaved, walks on a leash, rides quietly in the car, and appears potty trained. Learn more about Leo at one of the great online resources for adopting pets, Petfinder.com. Special thanks to Westie Rescue of Missouri - Illinois Representative in Champaign, who is caring for Leo.
Adopt-A-Dog: Pug, May 2010
From Petfinder.com: Portis came to Colorado Pug Rescue because his owners could not spend enough time with him. He wants to be with his people all the time and needs a home with someone home most of the day. He also needs an assertive owner who will establish a leadership position over him. Once Portis respects his owner as pack leader, he is very obedient. Portis walks on a leash without pulling and will sit and stay on command. He is crate trained, although he whines when he is in his crate and knows his people are nearby. If you can provide a lot of companion time and some leadership skills, Portis's loyal and affectionate nature might make him the dog for you. Portis is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered. Learn more about Portis at one of the great online resources for adopting pets, Petfinder.com. Special thanks to Colorado Pug Rescue in Denver, Colorado, for caring for Portis.
Adopt-A-Dog: Cairn Terrier Mix, April 2010
From Petfinder.com: Hello my name is Dutch. I was taken to the Lancaster pound because my family lost their home to a foreclosure and couldn't take me with them. I was very sad. I am a 12 month old Cairn Terrier mix, weighing in at about 7 lbs. I am cute and blonde. I sometimes think I am the size of a Mastiff. I am currently living in a foster home with 10 other 4 legged siblings. Most are dogs, which I like, but the cats are the most fun to chase. I don't think they like me. I can be protective in your arms if you let me and sometimes forget I am just a little dude. I am house trained and in good health and would love to find my forever home. Being fostered in Los Angeles, California. Learn more about Dutch at one of the great online resources for adopting pets, Petfinder.com. Special thanks to Marley's Pit Stop Rescue in Los Angeles, California, for caring for Dutch.

Louie enjoys being out in the yard playing & running; he also loves being with his humans just hanging out. Louie is neutered, current on vaccines, microchipped, dewormed & just had a dental by our vet. He needs a little more time to be completely trained but he's doing very well & goes potty every time he's taken outside. His adoption donation is $500. Adopt-A-Dog: Pomeranian, February 2010
From Petfinder.com: My name is Mocha and I am a wonderful 6 year old female Purebred Light Golden Brown Pomeranian. I am such a smart girl who would love to learn tricks for treats. I will stand for a long time and walk and dance around for my favorite treat! I am only 15 lbs, a loyal lap dog who would love someone to show me a stable family home. I am a real sweetheart that just want to make a my new owners feel love and appreciated. I get along great with other dogs, adults, older kids but have not been around cats before. I am so lucky to be saved as I came from a terrible puppy mill. I was such a good girl when I was first groomed and had to have such filth washed off of me. Being locked up in a cage my entire life my hair was in knots and it took hours to groom me. Now i look beautiful and proud. I am a trooper and willing to love who ever give me a lifetime commitement. My adoption fee of $ 525.00 covers my Spay, Bordatella, Dewormed, Advantage Flea Treated, Groom, Microchipped, Puppy Mill fee, Boarding Fees and Transport fees. My adoption fee will also go towards helping many of our rescued dogs who are in desperate need of medical care.

Adopt-A-Dog: Brussels Griffon, January 2010
From Petfinder.com: Hello! Im Sydney - one of the 43 dogs who came to OHS from a Breeder and I am now in search of a new loving home. I am quite outgoing and am looking for someone who can teach me how to become an indoor companion. I have not yet been potty trained leash trained nor have I ever worn a collar; but with positive reinforcement and some good treats for motivation hopefully I will learn the ropes. I am not used to a normal dog life so I should stay on a harness/leash when outdoors as I might startle easily in new situations. My ideal home would be with someone who will be patient with me as I have a lot to learn but that patience will pay off in unconditional love!

From Petfinder.com: Robbie is a sweet little neutered male Chihuahua. Since he was found as a stray, his history is unknown but we do know he is about a year old and he's very friendly. Robbie would like to find a new forever family to keep him safe and secure. He loves to play and enjoys being held and getting attention. He's not a "teacup" but still a little guy, weighing just over 5 pounds. Find out more about Robbie at one of the great online resources for adopting pets, Petfinder.com. Adopt-A-Dog: Bichons, October 2009
From Petfinder.com: These two cute Bichon Frises, Pete and Mac, are looking for a gentle, patient family to adopt them. There were rescued from a horrible puppy mill in May 2009 so they're still very shy. They would benefit from a home with another dog to help socialize them and teach them what it means to be a dog in a loving home. Children in the home must be over the age of 10. Mac is about 8 years old and Pete is about 7. They have bonded and really need each other so must be adopted together. They know what being caged is but freedom to run and play in a yard is new to them. They're a bit skittish but well behaved, partially housebroken and use a doggie door. They sleep in a doggie bed, have a great appetite and love treats. Pete and Mac are good with other dogs, but haven't been tested around cats or children. They love treats and to be scratched. You can find out more about Pete and Mac at one of the great online resources for adopting pets, Petfinder.com. Special thanks to Valley Dogs for caring for these two cute Bichons until their new family finds them.
